I don’t think I talked about a lot of headgear when going over all my gear, so let’s start off with my all time favourite piece of headgear, the Helikon Watch Cap.
There is a whole variety of headgear out there but once I started using this little cap, every other hat didn’t feel as good as this one. It’s hard to describe why that is but I will try my best.
Light and flexible
It’s lightweight with its 42g and it is very compact so you can easily put it in your vest, pants or backpack depending on when you want to use it.
Because of the flexible fleece fabric it is breathable but still stops the wind and rain quite well. When it gets wet, it dries up very fast, faster than a wool cap and it does not itch like a woolen cap does. Which makes it a very comfortable piece of headgear.
It does not have a velcro spot on it, but I like that. This is designed to do one thing and it is doing it perfectly.
Affordable with many configurations
So for a price of about 10 euros you get yourself a very affordable good cap. That is why I like Helikon products. They are good and affordable, that mix makes for perfect products for us.
The cap is available in 9 different colors but all mine are black because black goes with everything and I usually wear it when it gets dark so the color doesn’t really matter.
Because of the design you can wear it in different configurations depending on your activity and how warm your body is. This way you can regulate your heat loss easily. Usually I wear it all the way down but you can also roll it up or even just lift the back end and tuck it in or even remove it completely and put it in your pocket to take it out again a few minutes later when needed.
I also wear it underneath my full face mask. It keeps my head warm and softens the bb impact on my head.
A small thing I noticed on Berget when the sun sets and the mosquitos are coming, I switch my boonie for this cap and it keeps the small annoying bugs away from my head.
One big negative point
There is one big negative point on these caps and that they are so compact and versatile that I use them all the time so I forget where I placed them and because they are so comfortable they are an easy steal for my wife when she gets a cold. So because of that I had to buy more so I have them everywhere.
So besides the negative, this is a perfect piece of kit that does not need any improvement and I will keep buying and using them.
